These are the first character concept design for the book (above). This was the first step in the process after reading the manuscript. I wanted to feel out the character, push him around and start to play with different looks and techniques.
After some feedback from the author and the people at Walker Books I then refined the character (below) and begun to explore his physicality and movement even further, as that's such an important element of the story.
I also came up with a design for Alfredo's best friend Marty (below). The author and publisher left it up to me to decide on what kind of a creature Marty was, so I decided on a fly!
